THREE SORELLAS IN PARIS

PART 1:
Feeling the need for some inspiration-my sister Jeanine, good friend Lauren and I took off for a week in Paris on November 6-pretty much on the spur of the moment. If we had waited and planned more we never would have gone. Leaving husbands, kids, dogs, the shop, a couple of other careers (a court case for Lauren and corporate nutrition work for Jeanine) we flew off to Paris, leaving Jeanine's Blackberry behind on a chair at the Philly USAir gate. We felt a bit guilty because of our home responsibilities but proceeded by using the refrain "It's Paris!" to squash any thoughts of turning around.

We agreed to make a few plans but to mostly let Paris lead us by the hand. We flew all night and arrived bleary eyed at 7 am at Charles deGaulle Airport. The taxi ride to our city hotel Le Muguet on Rue Chevert was filled with rush hour traffic, carbon monoxide fumes, motorcycles weaving between the lanes and cold gray, drizzly weather. Not our best introduction. Thankfully our hotel room was ready and the three of us poured ourselves into our single beds for a two hour nap. We awakened semi-refreshed to our favorite model in Paris-a view of the Eiffel Tower directly outside of our balcony. Five stories below on our street, groups of children were being walked to school by their mothers, chattering in their romantic language. We couldn't get dressed fast enough to begin exploring.

We walked a short distance to Rue du Cler, a closed-off cobblestone street lined with specialty food, clothing and book shops. This street was a foodies dream come true-buy any type of cheese from La Fromagerie ( Comte, blue and goat cheese that melted in your mouth), next door pair your wine with the help of the handsome "wine boy" owner of La Repaire de Bacchus, (State Store??s-OMG you should have tasted the wine we got there for 4 Euros) saunter a little more to the fruit and vegetable store -fresh figs, plump tart grapes, huge raspberries (I can never go into an American supermarket again-I am ruined), next to the meat store which had the most beautiful little lights twinkling in the ceiling and the friendliest people working the counter, the fish market and a zillion other little gems. Great people watching on Rue du Cler, women pulling their little shopping carts-the French seemed to shop every day, making sure each meal was fresh and suited their mood, dogs, children on scooters, couples, men hurrying past with bunches of flowers in their hand. Are you kidding me, if we saw that in the U.S. it would definitely be Valentines Day-here it was a common occurrence. Every day the three of us ate breakfast at Rue du Cler next to the Hotel Leveque. Great coffee and an omelet or croissant, fresh and flaky. The server was nice but reserved but once she saw how hard we were trying to order in French and complimented the food, she seemed to relax and smile. The server at the cafe the last two days was h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e. Impatient, rude, never looked at us, slammed the dishes down in front of us. For no reason at all. When we asked for the check, she was going out for a cigarette break, and screamed something in French to another server to come take care of us. She was over the top rude, but thank goodness we met so many other wonderful people that made up for her behavior!

It is women getting together for a fun night, and donating a percentage of the night's proceeds to a women's or children's cause.

I NEVER GO ANYWHERE

This is the refrain heard all the time, and sadly lamented by our clients as they lovingly touch all of the clothing on the racks here at Sorella Boutique. Women come in every day and tell us how much they love our clothing but "I never go anywhere" so I don't need it. Hmmm....I have other thoughts about this type of comment. I believe more and more that making an effort in appearance every day and presenting yourself with a little flourish goes a long way towards showing respect for yourself and others around you. It just makes you feel better and boosts confidence. You walk a little taller and with a little more spring in your step. I don't mean that every day you need to spend an hour doing your makeup and dressing head to toe- no one has time for that any more. What I do feel is that you should try to put your best foot forward-put on a fave pair of earrings, loop a scarf around your tee shirt, jangle a pretty bracelet on your wrist. And for goodness sake-if you are going to a funeral-dress up, if you are going to a wedding-dress up! There are no "casual weddings". A wedding is a very very special monumental occasion and guests should dress the part.

If you feel you "don't go anywhere"-think about this.

Most days you DO go out of the house-to the grocery store, the bank, the post office. Think about how many people you see, you pass on the street-whether you make eye contact or not-you are probably "seeing" at least a hundred people. The old adage "your first impression is sometimes your only one" is still relevant today. I know everyone likes to be "comfortable" in their clothing, but that does not always mean a sweatsuit or ill fitting clothing. Denim today is made with stretch in it-super comfy to travel in and dark denim is chic, not to mention slimming. Wear a pair of ballet flats or wedges instead of sneakers when you travel. If I see one more person in the airport with sweatpants, sneakers and a fannypack on- I am going to depants them right there on the tarmac. (You never see that outfit on Europeans.) Sneakers are for running and exercising. No more fannypacks-wear a crossbody messenger bag if you want to be safe and hands free.

So my advice for women is- buy a few pairs of good denim-Sorella has some that won't break the bank and we will hem them for you appropriately for heels or flats. Gather some tops with a few different silhouettes- tunics to wear with skinny jeans or leggings, and shorter versions to wear with bootcut. Collect a few scarves for color or texture and a wide belt and a skinny belt. And never forget your accessories -they are the gravy of the outfit.

Jeans that slim your backside
Watch your pockets. I don’t mean the cost of your jeans. I am actually talking about the type of pockets you choose. The wrong pocket types can actually make your backside look bigger.

.•Small pockets on the backside can make it appear larger.

• No pockets on the backside tricks the eye into thinking the area is larger.

Jeans that can add more curves
Skinny jeans are great for skinny figures.

• Accentuate the look with ballet flats or ankle boots

Jeans that can conceal wide hips

Tips on Finding the Right Pair of Jeans

Jeans are a staple in the wardrobe of almost every American woman. We wear jeans for comfort and also versatility. Even though we love jeans, we all know it’s one of the hardest pieces clothing to shop for. Shopping for jeans doesn’t have to be a nightmare. It’s important to try on a variety of styles and shapes from all different designers, because every pair is different; even the sizes under different brand names will differ.

Here are a few tips I’ve learned for choosing the perfect pair jeans for your body type that can make shopping a lot less stressful:

Full Curves

It’s important to know that low rise jeans will only create a visible bulge beneath your clothing, and jeans with a high rise will emphasize the size of your stomach. So, look for jeans that fall somewhere in the middle, right underneath the belly button is perfect because the waist band works like a control top.

A common misconception among woman is that "stretch" works for everyone. Not exactly true, jeans with 1% or 2% spandex are great for added comfort and a body conscious fit, but they don’t exactly shape your body. Jeans without stretch suck you in and mold your shape to a certain extent, making them the perfect choice for curvier women.

Petite

A pair of straight legs, worn on the long side, to help give you a taller silhouette. Styles that are fitted and close to the body will elongate your appearance. Low waist jeans are great as long as they don’t make your legs appear shorter. Stretch jeans are great for your figure.

Long Torso

A pair with a definite waist, which will make your bottom half look longer and leaner. Avoid super low-rise, this will make your torso even longer.

With a record heat last week many of us were looking for ways to dress for the heat but still look fabulous. Here are a few tips for keeping stylishly cool:

Breathable Fabrics - Cotton, linen or rayon. These fabrics keep you cool while wicking away moisture.

Loose Fit: Lose fitting clothing keeps the fabric away from your body and allow better air circulation.

Hair Styles: Low chignons, topknots, side braids and sleek ponytails can all keep your hair up and your neck cool and they are all on trend this year.

How to Wear White

Wearing white, even during summer time, can be tricky. Here are a few tips:

Don’t dress in all white. The primary reason is that an all white outfit can wash you out, particularly if you are fair-skinned. Pair white with neutral colors or bright colors for a balanced summer look.

What about white shoes? White shoes are synonymous with little girl’s shoes. It’s ok to wear white shoes if you can find a pair that fit your style and fit your outfit. Just make sure that you are not too color coordinated.

Choose your undergarments carefully. Wearing white means you have to be extra careful. Double check, triple check and have a friend check to make sure your undies aren’t showing through. Just because you are wearing white under white clothing doesn’t mean they won’t show through. Try going with flesh tone colors closest to the color to your skin tone.
